Municipality of La Oliva, Fuerteventura

La Oliva, a charming municipality in the northern region of Fuerteventura, is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, north, and east, while Puerto del Rosario lies to the south. The small island of Los Lobos, located to the northeast, is also included within its boundaries. Among the many attractions in La Oliva, exploring its natural areas is essential. The Montaña de Tindaya mountain is a remarkable site with significant archaeological and geological importance. The Parque Natural de Corralejo is renowned for its stunning dunes, while the Parque de Lobos is home to around 130 species of flora and fauna in a landscape that remains largely untouched by human activity. The natural monument known as Monumento Natural del Malpaís de la Arena showcases the beauty created by volcanic eruptions that occurred approximately ten thousand years ago. Finally, the Paisaje Protegido de Vallebrón is a protected landscape that preserves the agricultural structures built by humans within a lush valley.
Historically, the boundaries of the municipality have remained largely unchanged, rooted in the ecclesiastical organization established in the 18th century. In 1837, following the abolition of the señoríos or lordships, the island came under the control of the Spanish Crown. This period also saw the reorganization of Spain into municipal divisions, leading to the establishment of the Town Council of La Oliva and its corresponding district.

The name "Lobos" translates to "Island of the Wolves." However, there have never been any actual wolves on the island; it was named after the numerous sea wolves that once inhabited the area, which were actually monk seals. Unfortunately, these creatures have been hunted to near extinction. The Mediterranean monk seal is now considered one of the most critically endangered species. While there are occasional reports of sightings, it is highly unlikely that monk seals still exist around Los Lobos.
