Southern Grey Shrike,Fuerteventura Nature

The Southern Grey Shrike can be seen on Fuerteventura, this medium sized bird up to 25 centimetres in length eats large insects, small birds and rodents. Shrikes are also known as "butcher birds" because of their feeding habits, they hunt from prominent perches, and impale corpses on thorns as a "larder".
The Southern Grey Shrike has extremely good eyesight and can spot its prey on the ground from a distance of 250 metres, they kill their prey by using their beak to crack the skull or the spinal cord.

Saw a Southern Grey Shrike in El Cotillo, Fuerteventura. It was silent and spent several minutes perched on a branch constantly turning it's head looking for prey.

Saw a Grey Shrike opposite Sottavento Restaurant in El Cotillo, very noisy or I wouldn't have noticed it was there.

Spotted a Southern Grey Shrike at El Cotillo, Fuerteventura in the bushes near Los Lagos beach, not sure what it was hunting but there were quite a few dragonflies around.
