The cabra majorera or Fuerteventura Goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) is the producer of the milk from which the famous Majorero cheese is made. It is the most important domestic mammal of Fuerteventura from an economic perspective and apart from the cheese goat meat is available in many restaurants.
Goats are one of the oldest domesticated species in the world and have been used for their milk, meat, hair, and skins for over ten thousand years. Kids are known on Fuerteventura as cabritos or baifos.
They thrive on Fuerteventura with their abilty to adapt to arid and semi-arid areas and can often be seen wandering around the island, including the roads.
